Where's My Tax Refund?

To track the status of your federal tax refund, there are several methods available for taxpayers, outlined in this guide.

When it comes to tax refunds, the IRS typically issues over 90% of them within 21 days after receiving a tax return. This means most individuals can expect their federal refund in under three weeks after filing their 1040 return.

However, it’s important to note that this timeline isn’t guaranteed. There are instances where processing and issuing the refund might take longer. To expedite your tax return processing, opt for e-filing and ensure accuracy in your forms. For a faster refund issuance, choose the “Direct Deposit” option.

The IRS offers an online tool called “My Refund” for taxpayers to track their federal refund status. To use this tool, have these details ready: your Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), filing status, and the exact refund amount.

You can check your refund status within 24 hours of e-filing or within 4 weeks if you filed by paper. The IRS updates its system daily, generally overnight, allowing you to check the “Where’s My Refund” tool once a day for updates.

You also have the option to track your refund status using your mobile device through the IRS2Go app, the official IRS smartphone application. This app allows users to monitor their tax refund, make payments, and access free tax preparation assistance.

Available in both English and Spanish, IRS2Go can be downloaded from the Apple App Store, Google Play, or Amazon.

If you’re concerned about a delayed refund, it’s essential to consider the timeline since you filed your tax return before contacting the IRS directly. For e-filed returns, waiting more than 21 days might warrant contacting the IRS about your refund’s progress. However, if you filed a paper return, it’s advisable to wait at least 6 weeks before reaching out to the IRS.

The “Where’s My Refund” tool provides guidance on how to get in touch with the IRS. Alternatively, you can contact us for assistance.
